The town of Sonoma has a special place in many hearts with its rich past and historic square flanked by restaurants, boutique shops and wine tasting. Sonoma is considered the birthplace of winemaking in California. In its early days Sonoma was the capital of the California Republic. Today you're more likely to run into the an International Film Festival than the spirit of General Vallejo while visiting the areas wineries and vineyards. Buena Vista Winery was established by Agoston Haraszthy in 1857 and is still in operation today. To north you can find the beautiful Valley Of The Moon (Sonoma Valley) and to the south you will find the Carneros growing region known for producing quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for both still and sparkling wines. In 2010 the town of Sonoma had a population of just under 11,000 residents.
